I’M JACK.

I specialize in thoughtful mastering to bring your songs and artistic vision to life.

ABOUT

After entering the industry as an artist and mixing engineer I quickly realized that the slightly mysterious, always subtle world of mastering was my true passion. Using my detailed knowledge of the entire musical creative process as a guide, I decided to dive head first into becoming a mastering engineer.

Thousands of hours spent mastering records, investing in state-of-the-art gear, refining my listening environment, and working with demanding artists has honed my skillset and allowed me to say with confidence that I can deliver you an outstanding product and fulfilling creative experience. I would love to work on your music!

PHILOSOPHY

I operate with a “no compromise” mindset; we will do whatever is needed to ensure your vision is achieved. There are no limits on revisions. I strive to create an environment where honest and open communication is encouraged and easy. No corners will be cut, ever.

My singular focus when mastering your record is to maximize your vision and ensure that the emotion, hard work, and creativity you put into it translates everywhere. This is unique to every project and begins with clear communication. I strive to emphasize and highlight what makes your music stand out!

On a more personal note, I hope we can build a fruitful long-term collaborative creative relationship. I aim to be a trusted part of your music-making process and want you to be able to count on me to finish your music and get it ready for the world to hear.

WORK

I have worked with artists and teams of all sizes, from the biggest major labels and Grammy winners to those who are making music for the first time. No matter the reach of your music or your experience I’d love to be aboard and will give it my absolute all to make the most compelling record we can.

The joy is in the work and the relationships we build together.

 FAQs

  • Put simply, it’s the final process to ensure your music will sound great and portray your artistic vision in all listening environments.

Technically, it’s the tasteful use (or non-use) of EQ, compression, saturation, and limiting across your final mix to achieve your artistic vision.

Most importantly, it’s an engineer using their experience, a great monitoring setup, and high-end tools to balance your record and make sure it achieves it’s highest potential.

A final but often overlooked step is ensuring your files are in the correct format, order, sample rate, and include the correct metadata.

  • Most importantly, I have put in the time to understand my tools and develop my skillset. I will approach your music with respect and care since I understand the process of being an artist and mixer so intimately. On top of that, I have an extremely high-end listening environment and gear tailored specifically for this purpose so you can count on me to make subtle decisions that reinforce and elevate your vision.

  • The most important piece of gear for any mastering engineer is their monitoring environment. Mine has been built and treated specifically for mastering purposes. This included significant inner wall treatment, special acoustic felt board finishes on all the walls and ceilings, hidden bass traps in built into the corners, and just enough liveliness from hard surfaces to make sure I hear what I need and nothing else. Not to mention the incredible PMC 6-2 and 8 Sub speakers. More than meets the eye! It is hard to overstate the importance of a great sounding room and speaker combo when mastering since all decisions are filtered through its response.

    Monitoring:

PMC 6-2 + Pair of PMC 8 Subs

    Outboard:

    D.W. Fearn VT-5 EQ
    Lynx Hilo conversion

    Digital:

Fabfilter, Weiss, Softube, Sonnox Oxford, GoodHertz, DMG…

  • Send me a link in whatever format you prefer on whichever method is easiest (text, email, etc).

For texting files, be sure to include them in some sort of file sharing link (Dropbox, whatever). Attaching a wav file to a text thread will often convert it to a lossy format, which is why the file sharing links work better there.

Bottom line: you can upload the files directly to me, download them easily when they are done, and be assured of their safety and security. If you have any more questions just bring it up with me!

I keep copies of your sessions and final files indefinitely so if you ever need changes or new versions in the future rest assured I will have them!

  • I do my best to make absolutely sure you are satisfied with my work. If after several revisions things don’t seem to be working out and it’s clear I’m not the right fit I’m happy to refund your money. It’s most important that your music finds the right engineer and you achieve the vision you have. Luckily this is an extremely rare occurrence. I am open to feedback and am willing to do whatever it takes to get the result you are after.

Please keep in mind that I do not work “on spec” and will not refund you without going through a good-faith revision process.

STUDIO

My studio has been designed from the walls up, in consultation with Unf*ck Projects, to maximize the possibilities of the space for mastering. It is truly an incredibly accurate and boutique listening environment.

Acoustic treatment is housed in the framing behind the absorptive felt-board walls and ceiling. Tuned membrane bass traps are hidden behind special housings on either side of the listening position to ensure that low frequencies are represented accurately. Even all the finishes are chosen with acoustics in mind. This allows me to trust what I’m hearing to make subtle adjustments that bring out the character in your record and vision.

PMC 6-2 monitors, with an additional PMC 8-Sub on each channel, represent the entire frequency spectrum with immense detail. A carefully curated and vetted array of the highest-end analog and digital gear allows me to use my skills reliably to get results demanding clients expect consistently.
